ACUÑA, Cristóbal de (1597-c.1676), and others

Voyages and Discoveries in South-America. London: S. Buckley, 1698.

The only English edition of the text, presented with two other accounts of voyages of discovery to South America by Acarete du Biscay, and John Grillet and Francis Bechamel, with two engraved maps. Acuña’s account is a survey of the Amazon intended to ascertain its suitability for transporting precious metals to the Atlantic from Peru. The text was first published in Spanish in 1641 but was apparently suppressed by order of Philip IV in response to Portuguese territorial expansions in Brazil. The first plate, showing the course of the Amazon, was designed by the French royal geographer Nicolas Sanson d’Abbeville (1600-1667); the second, showing ‘the provinces of Paraguay and Tucuman with the River Plate’, is by an unknown cartographer and appears to be unique. Sabin 152.

Octavo (186 x 113mm). 2 folding engraved maps (occasional light browning slightly more prominent at beginning and affecting first plate more heavily, tiny marginal chips to C7 and N2). Contemporary calf (rebacked, extremities rubbed, corners a little more heavily).
