€ 21 000
Fein ausgeführte Malerei auf strukturiertem Aquarellpapier. Rechts unten betitelt "München Standesamt", links unten signiert "A. Hitler".

Adolf Hitler - a watercolour "München Standesamt" (tr. Munich Registry Office)
Very well executed painting on structured watercolour paper. Meticulously captured architecture, the Munich register office on the Petersbergl with the tower of the Old City Hall in the background. Titled on the lower left "München Standesamt", signed on the lower right "A. Hitler". Under glass, in mount and old wood frame, dimensions framed 37.7 x 29.5 cm. Cf. two very similar watercolours sold by Hermann Historica, one in auction 69 on 12 December 2014, lot 6113, previously owned by Hermine Hoffmann (1857 - 1945), an early NSDAP party member. Another watercolour with the same motif from the estate of the Munich arms manufacturer Adam Schork, who purchased the watercolour from Hitler in 1914. Hermann Historica, auction 57, 29 April 2009, lot 6249, which sold for 63,000 euros. This watercolour was previously offered for sale as lot number 4074 in our 79th auction but had to be withdrawn shortly before the auction as it was alleged to be a forgery. As a result, the authorities carried out a thorough investigation but found no evidence whatsoever to substantiate this claim. The watercolour had to be taken out of its frame for the purpose of inspection and the packing tape affixing the cardboard panel was professionally removed. The back panel is therefore only secured provisionally to the frame.
Provenance: Regarding the history of the painting: it was previously owned by an old Munich family who wish to remain anonymous. Purchased in Munich in the 1920s by a former civil servant at a Bavarian government agency in commemoration of his wedding in 1901 in the depicted registry office.
The family, who supported the conservative Centre Party and were opposed to Hitler, were later prosecuted by the National Socialists. They were unaware of who had painted the watercolour, believing it to be the work of the Munich painter Hiller. The identity of the true artist was only discovered during their research prior to selling the painting. The proceeds will be used to support a project of a cultural foundation.
