In 1919 Emil Maurice (1897 - 1972) joined the DAP, which was renamed NSDAP in 1920. In 1920/21 he was a co-founder of the "Sturmabteilung", and in May 1923 he became a founding member and adjutant of "Stoßtrupp Hitler". After the failed coup d'état in November 1923, he was sentenced to 15 months in prison in 1924, which he served with Hitler in Landsberg. After his release he became Hitler's bodyguard, driver and companion, joined the SS with the number "2" and the newly founded NSDAP with the number "39". Despite his Jewish great-grandfather, his close friendship with Hitler earned him the special status of an "honorary Aryan", becoming a councilman for the city of Munich in 1933, receiving the "Blutorden" and the Golden Party Badge of the NSDAP. He became a member of the Reichstag in 1936 and rose to the rank of SS Oberführer (1939). In 1948, he was sentenced to four years in a labour camp.
