A legal deposition regarding an accusation of adultery, in Latin, manuscript on paper, San Giovanni in Persiceto, near Bologna [14th century].
An adulterous kidnapping: a 14th-century legal deposition describing the circumstances of an alleged adultery committed by Benenuta, wife of Petricino, and Bartolomeo, in his home at San Giovanni in Perciseto.

144 x 232mm. 12 lines in a very distinctive and heavily abbreviated notarial script, reverse blank, the text beginning: ‘Dominus Civitatis Bonaaresi? [...] Petricini quondam petri Mulmarnis de Sancto Johanne in perseseto [...]’ (a small hole, some smudging).

Provenance:
Colker MS 127; acquired in 1967 from Renzo Rizzi.

The text is a deposition testifying to the fact that a certain Bartolomeo, son of the late Guido Balducci Beccarini of San Giovanni in Persiceto, kidnapped a woman called ‘Benenuta’, wife of Petricino, took her to his house and committed adultery with her ‘abstulisse eidem Petricino dominam Benenutam uxorem ipsius Petricini ducendo ipsam Benenutam ad domum ipsius Bartholomei [...] eam in domo ipsius Barthollomei conmitendo adulterium [...]’. The document lists a number of witnesses.
