En 1897 Aïvazovsky organise une exposition à Odessa qu’il consacre au martyr des chrétiens d’Orient. Deux toiles sont consacrées au massacre des Arméniens dans la mer de Marmara. Si la première version (1), conservée à Beyrouth, montre la violence des persécutions, notre tableau traite le même sujet dans un registre moins dramatique.

Le spectacle de la mer paisible contraste avec l’horreur de la scène, Aïvazovsky montre ainsi le triomphe de la nature et de l’art sur la barbarie ottomane.

Cette œuvre de mature exécutée avec une rare virtuosité alla prima.
