Albert Zimmermann war ein bedeutender deutscher Landschaftsmaler des 19. Jahrhunderts. Seine Werke zeichnen sich durch eine detailreiche Naturdarstellung und eine atmosphärische Lichtführung aus, oft in dramatischen Gebirgs- und Waldszenen. Gerade die heroische Landschaft eines Josef Anton Koch diente ihm als Vorbild. Als Professor lehrte er an den Akademien in Mailand, Wien und München und prägte mit seinem Stil eine ganze Generation von Landschaftsmalern.

Vorliegendes Gemälde ist ein kapitales Großformat aus dem Sterbejahr des Künstlers.
