Albrecht Dürer first published the woodcut series on the Apocalypse in 1498. It was created under the impression of his first trip to Venice in 1495/1495, during which the young artist came into contact with the Italian Renaissance for the first time. Only shortly before publication, he became an independent artist and developed this series on his own without a direct commission.
It was first printed with German text, and shortly afterwards in an edition with Latin text. The Apocalypse is still one of the artist's best-known works today. It was a great success in its day and formed the basis of his fame.
The present paper is the 15th and penultimate sheet of the series. In addition to the description of the following sheet, it also bears a printed reference to the artist and the time of its creation on the verso: "Gedrücket zu Nurnbergk / durch Albrecht dürer maler nach / Christi geburt. M.cccc imd dar- / nach im xcviii. jar."
