Album of sketches and photographs, 1870s to early 1900s

4to album (294 x 242mm.), containing 21 sketches (mostly of plants and trees, and a few views), plus 4 proofs of etchings, 9 photographs, and some newspaper cuttings, contemporary green half roan, gilt edges, silk endpapers, some spotting, a few mounts detached or becoming loose

with an autograph letter signed from Annie K. Bidwell (botanist, suffrage campaigner, and temperance reformer) to J.D. Hooker, dated Jan. 8th 1878, 4pp., 8vo, loosely inserted

Several of the sketches in this album date from Hooker’s 1877 trip to the United States. He was accompanied by Asa Gray, the foremost American botanist of the time, and the amateur botanist and philanthropist John Bidwell (several of the cuttings and photographs towards the end of the album relate to Bidwell).
