ALDROVANDI, Ulisse (1522-1605) - De reliquis animalibus exanguibus libri quatuor, post mortem eius editi: nempe de mollibus, crustaceis, testaceis et zoophytis. Bologna: Giovan Battista Bellagamba, 1606 (1605 al colophon). A fine copy in contemporary blindstamped pigskin, on strong paper and with good impressions of the numerous illustrations.The first edition of Aldrovandi's treatise on molluscs, crustacea, and zoophytes and one of the earliest works devoted almost entirely to shells. The work is part of the larger natural history encyclopedia by Aldrovandi and the illustrations and descriptions are based on the author's direct observations of the specimens conserved in his "teatro di natura". Folio (332 x 230mm). Engraved title within al elaborate architectural border incorporating the arms of the city of Bologna, engraved portrait of the author, numerous woodcut illustrations, headpieces and initials, printer's device at end (title with minor marginal restorations and some neat repairs at some small wormholes). Contemporary blindstamped pigskin over wooden boards dated 1589 with arms, with its original metal clasps.
