DODGSON, Charles Lutwidge (“Lewis Carroll” 1832-1898). Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. * Through the Looking-Glass. New York: The Limited Editions Club, 1932 & 1935.

The iconic Wonderland works signed by the original “Alice” in both volumes, on a special leaf at the beginning of Alice's Adventures and on the colophon in Looking-Glass. On the hundredth anniversary of Lewis Carroll’s birth in 1932, Columbia University invited Alice Hargreaves, née Liddell, to New York for a series of celebratory events in honor of the great children’s writer. Her visit inspired a special edition of Alice, the present copy being one of only 200 inscribed by her during her trip. Alice is No. 693 of 1500. Looking-Glass is No. 809 of 1500. Cohen, 520-521.

Together, two volumes, octavo (219 x 140mm). Half-titles in each volume, wood-engraved frontispieces and illustrations after John Tenniel. Original red and blue roan gilt, all edges gilt (Adventures with some spotting to endleaves; Looking Glass with tiny chips to spine ends and lower joint started); original cloth slipcases (the first one faded/rubbed). Provenance: Sotheby’s, 10 November 1998, lots 70 and 71.
