PIETER (PEETER OR PETER) SNIJERS ('ALSO CALLED: THE SAINT') 30 March 1681 Anwerp - 4 May 1752 Ibid ALLEGORY OF SUMMER: LANDSCAPE WITH MARKET WOMAN, FRUITS AND VEGETABLES Oil on canvas (old relined) 40 x 49 cm (F. 72 x 81 cm). Signed in the center of the column base: 'P. Snijers'. Part. min. old restored, minor retouching (insignificant). Frame. The present work 'Allegory of Summer: Landscape with Market Woman, Fruits and Vegetables' is typical for the work of Pieter Snijers, who studied under Alexander von Bredal in 1694 and was registered as a member of the Guild of St Luke in Antwerp in 1707. A stay by Snijers in London, where he painted various portraits of nobility, is verified between 1720 and 1726. On 17 August 1741 Snijers signed a contract with five other artists to teach as director of the Antwerp Academy, which replaced the Lukasgilde. Among the painter's major works is a series of 12 paintings, each depicting a different month of the year. The series, which never left the artist's studio during his lifetime, were dispersed at auction in 1763 (after the artist's death). Two of the paintings (January and July) are now in the Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Antwerp, while two others (April and May) are housed by the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium, in Brussels. Christies in New York auctioned March and December in 1998 (New York, 29 January 1998, lot 3). die beiden Monate März und Dezember (New York, 29. Januar 1998, Los 3). Provenance: South German Private Collection.
