A SET OF THREE CARVED WOOD PANELS FROM AN ALTAR WING REPRESENTING SCENES FROM THE LIFE OF MARY, SOUTH GERMAN OR ALPENLÄNDISH, CIRCA 1500

As the cult of the Virgin grew, altarpieces dedicated to her multiplied in the 15th century. They presented the major episodes of her life as a testimony to her holiness. In our altarpiece, three episodes from the Virgin's life were selected: the Annunciation, the Dormition and the Nativity, as in the altarpiece in the church of Saint-Martin in Tauberbischofsheim, reflecting a widespread iconographic tradition. However, a fourth panel from our altarpiece, depicting the Adoration of the Magi, has probably been found in a private German collection.

Set in contemporary domestic settings, these scenes link dogma to reality, as prescribed by the doctrine of the Devotio moderna spiritual movement. The folds in the drapery, the treatment of the reliefs and the contrast between the architectural background and the figures place our suite of panels in a production from southern Germany or the Alps around 1500.

Shipment of the won lot depends on its size. Small items can be delivered by post. Larger lots are sent by courier. Employees of the auction houses will offer you a wide range to choose from.
