JOSSELYN, John (fl. 1630-1675). An Account of Two Voyages to New-England. London: Giles Widdows, at the Green-Dragon in St. Paul's-Church-yard, 1674.

Henry Stevens's copy of the first edition of one of the earliest works on the flora and fauna of the American Northeast. Josselyn first visited New England in 1638-1639, and returned again for a longer stay from 1663 to 1671. This work comments on the medical uses and abuses of various flora and fauna, including tobacco. "Josselyn included many medical and surgical observations with his American botanical descriptions, and also provided one of the best contemporary English accounts of New Netherland" (Streeter). This copy matches the Streeter and JCB copies, with B3 signed. Church 627; ESTC R20234; Howes J-254 ('c'); Sabin 36672; Streeter sale II, 635; Stevens 1567 (this copy); JCB III p.276.

Two parts in one volume, octavo (144 x 87mm). Publisher's woodcut device on recto of license leaf, 3 pp. of publisher's ads (license leaf remarged at gutter, one leaf with outer margin restored just touching letters, other small repairs and stains). Red morocco gilt signed by W. Pratt for H. Stevens, 1874, edges gilt. Provenance: Henry Stevens (1819-1886, American bibliographer; binding signature; his sale, Sotheby's, 11 July 1881, lot 239) – Anson Phelps Stokes (1838-1913, American banker; bookplate stating inheritence to:) – Rev. Anson Phelps Stokes, Jr. (1874-1958, American civil rights activist and canon of the Washington National Cathedral).
