Lot 116 | AN AQUAMARINE CRYSTAL CLUSTER
Estimate value
$ 15 000 – 25 000
A large, robust, stunning cluster of very glassy aquamarine crystals from the Roof of the World, high atop the mountains of the Himalayas. They formed nearly 100 million years ago as India slammed into Asia, causing the rise of these mountain ranges. Pristine large crystals of this size and quality are rare, and always have been. These sharp hexagonal crystals form a geometric cluster, more significant than any single, that has a very volumetric impact on the viewer. The end faces are very sharply developed. This cluster is complete all around, 360 degrees. It was in the private collection of mineral dealer Herb Obodda, who quite literally opened the door for fine specimens of minerals to start flowing out of Pakistan and Afghanistan, where before him most material was either destroyed for carving and cutting material, or not harvested at all. Herb taught a generation of dealers and miners how to mine, preserve, and bring to market these treasures of the Himalayas. Without him, we would not have seen so many Himalayan range mineral specimens come to market. While aquamarine is now common enough on the market, this is a special old piece, with a unique style characteristic of finds from the 1990s when he brought it out. It is remarkable in its condition, without damage. Supported on a removable custom lucite base ..
5 x 4⅞ x 4⅛ in. (12.8 x 12.2 x 10.5 cm.)
2.16 kg.
