Sturm an der Mole von Ostende

Die Urgewalt der See hat sich entfesselt. Mit gewaltigen Wellen wirft sich das Meer der Mole von Ostende entgegen. Gänzlich unbeeindruckt von diesem Treiben beschreiten zwei schwer bepackte Gestalten den Landungssteg in Richtung Festland. Ihre Gelassenheit und ihre Kleidung geben zu erkennen, dass sie diesem Spektakel nicht das erste Mal beiwohnen. Ihre Aufmerksamkeit gilt dem dunklen Schiff, das der rauen See schutzlos ausgeliefert scheint. Es ist ein fortwährender Kampf zwischen Maschine und Natur. Die schwarzen Rauchschwaden, die aus den Abzugsschächten des Dampfschiffes aufsteigen, künden von der schweren Last der Maschinen, die sich gegen das aufgewühlte Meer stemmen. Obschon der Sturm nachgelassen hat, verschwindet die langsam unter der Wolkendecke zum Vorschein kommende Morgensonne bereits wieder unter nebligen Rauchwolken. Die Blicke der beiden Männer mögen der Vergangenheit gelten - dem Abschluss einer langen, beschwerlichen Seereise.
Das vorliegende Gemälde zeugt jedoch nicht nur von einem Ringen zwischen Natur und Technologie, sondern gleichfalls von einem inneren Ringen des Künstlers. Zu Beginn seiner künstlerischen Laufbahn hatte Andreas Achenbach sich der Romantik verschrieben. Ganz in diesem Geiste weist das Werk eine empfindsame Poesie auf. Doch auch dem Realismus, zu dem er in seinem späteren Schaffen übergegangen ist, zollt der Künstler mit aufgeklärtem Blick Tribut. Die Industrialisierung war zu seiner Zeit schließlich hochaktuell.
