Beautiful Cosway binding celebrating the miniaturists, the Plimer brothers; limited edition. No. 128 of 365 copies; printed at the Chiswick Press. With 10 portrait miniatures of young ladies after the work of Andrew or Nathaniel Plimer, in Georgian dresses with some bonnets and ribbons and beads, often on blue backgrounds. The Plimer brothers came from a clock-making family, but the elder one, Andrew, soon discovered his vocation as an artist after he was employed as a servant in the home of Richard Cosway, already high in his profession as a miniaturist. Although the miniatures are unsigned their high quality is a sure indication that they are the work of C.B. Currie. Fine condition.

Large quarto (314 x 222mm). Half-title. Title printed in red and black. Copious half-tone illustrations of portrait miniatuares, captioned tissue guards. Full dark green crushed levant morocco by Riviere & Son, the covers with elaborate gilt-stamping of flowering vines amidst a double-rule arabesque gilt frame for the five portrait miniatures on each cover, miniatures on ivory and glazed; spine richly gilt in six compartments with raised bands; board edges gilt-ruled, turn-ins with triple gilt-rules and outer corner pieces, burgundy coated endpapers; top edge gilt, others uncut, stamp-signed by the binders on the upper turn-in (hint of rubbing to extremities and endpapers). Full dark red morocco fleece-lined pull-off case. Provenance: Christie’s New York, 5 December 1991, lot 432.
