Andy Warhol (1928 Pittsburgh - 1987 New York) (F)
'Mildred Scheel', Farbsiebdruck mit Diamantstaub auf Velin, 1980, 77,5 cm x 54,5 cm Blattmaß, signiert, 576/1000 nummeriert, montiert, leichte oberflächliche Bereibungen, im gelben Bildfeld minimales Craquelé in der Farbe, Literatur: Wvz. Feldman/Schellmann 238
Andy Warhol (1928 Pittsburgh - 1987 New York) (F)
'Mildred Scheel', color screen print with diamond dust on vellum, 1980, 77.5 cm x 54.5 cm sheet dimensions, signed, numbered 576/1000, mounted, slight superficial rubbing, minimal craquelure in the color in the yellow image field, literature: Cat. rais. Feldman/Schellmann 238
The portrait made by Andy Warhol shows Mildred Scheel, the wife of the former German Federal President Walter Scheel. She commissioned the paper to collect donations for the cancer charity she founded. The work was published by the German Cancer Aid e.V., Cologne and printed by Rupert Jasen Smith, New York. Unlike usual, Warhol did not use a press photo for the image, as he often did with his portraits of Hollywood stars. Instead, he used a photograph he had taken himself as the basis for the portrait of Mildred Scheel. Warhol himself described celebrities as ''pathetic ghosts of their reproduction'' and said that only his reproductions had a special aura. Overall, ''Mildred Scheel'' not only captures Scheel's personality and commitment to cancer relief, but also showcases Warhol's unique style and artistic vision.
