Book of Hours, use of Rouen, in Latin and French, illuminated manuscript on vellum [Rouen, third quarter 15th century]
A charming example of an Hours made in Rouen, a leading centre of manuscript production, at the end of the 15th century.
177 x 116mm. 101 leaves, complete, collation: 112, 2-128, 131 (of 2, ii a cancelled blank), modern foliation, 20 lines, ruled space: 96 x 57mm, catchwords survive, rubrics in red, illuminated initials and line fillers throughout, every page with a one-sided border, 14 large arch-topped miniatures within full borders (a little soiled and cockled, some dampstaining and cropping to opening leaves, else in good condition). French 17th century calf gilt, gilt edges (rubbed and scuffed, spine cracked).
Provenance:
(1) The liturgical use is of Rouen and a Rouen origin is confirmed by the entry of St Romanus in gold letters in the calendar (October 23). There is an erased inscription on the inside lower cover.

Illumination:
The linear compositions, textured gold patterns, emphatically gesturing figures and luminous green-blue hillsides all draw on stock models established by the Master of the Rouen Echevinage (fl.1455-85), the dominant illuminator in Rouen in the second half of the 15th century (see F. Avril and N. Reynaud, Les manuscrits à peintures en France, 1993, pp.170-2).

The results of the auction are published within a few days after the end of the auction. In the top menu of the site, find the tab "Auctions". Click on it and you will be on the auction catalog page, where you can easily find the category "Results". After opening it, select the desired auction from the list, enter and view the current status of the interested lot.
The information about the auction winners is confidential. The auction winner will receive a direct notification from the auction house responsible with instructions for further action: an invoice for payment and the manner in which the goods will be received.
Each of the auction houses has its own payment policy for the won lots. All auction houses accept bank transfers, most of them accept credit card payments. In the near future you will find detailed information for each case in the section "Auction information" on the page of the auction catalog and the lot.
Shipment of the won lot depends on its size. Small items can be delivered by post. Larger lots are sent by courier. Employees of the auction houses will offer you a wide range to choose from.
