ANSON, George (1697-1762) - Reise um die Welt. in den Jahren 1740, 41, 42, 43, 44. Leipzig, Göttingen: Vandenhoeck, 1749.

First edition in German, translated from English, of the report of George Anson's voyage around the globe from 1741 to 1744 written by his chaplain Richard Walter. The mission, which is part of the Seven Years War, had the objective of undermining the presence of the Spanish fleet in the Pacific. With the fleet decimated by disease and battles and reduced from the initial 9 ships to only the flagship, the Centurion, Anson managed to conclude the raid with a magnificent victory: he took possession of the silver treasure of the galleon Nuestra Señora de Cabadonga which allowed him to return to his homeland as a rich and celebrated man.

4to (243 x 195mm). 34 maps and plates (of which 32 folding), woodcut headpieces and initials, printed in Gothic type (tear repaired on second plate, light tears on some folding plates, lightly browned, some spotting especially on the first leaves, some light staining). Contemporary vellum with traces of manuscript title on spine, red edges (some staining and light defects). Provenance: Johann Bernhard Nack (exlibris dated 1759); Giuseppe Orlando (bookplate).
