"La Méditerranée" (The Mediterranean sea) or "La Pensée" (The thought). Original title
Bronze, bright green or black patina. Monograph. "M". Posthumous, contemporary cast to the sculpture of Maillol, in the year 1905. The seat is at the end, meaning students Nude in your well-balanced, quiet composition, the most famous work of his creation. As the plaster model of 1905 was exhibited at the Salon d'automne under the title of "Femme", attracted great attention. The writer André Gide wrote: "she's beautiful, she has no meaning". Later she received the title of "La Méditerranée". The limestone sculpture was then added and Harry Graf Kessler, in 1904 Maillol's patron of the arts, in order (it is now in the Oskar Reinhart collection in Winterthur/Switzerland). The Musée d'orsay in Paris has two copies: while the Bronze is of a recent date, was realized in the marble version 1923-27 during the lifetime of the artist. A Bronze copy was also used as decorations for Maillol's own tomb. H. approx. 88 cm, W. 94 cm, W. 64 cm.
