The slightly curved blade in fine Damascus steel with two grooves, tsarist cipher "N II" etched on the obverse, the Russian double-headed eagle and Cyrillic inscription "A.N. Annibal" on the reverse. The manufacturer's mark of Zlatoust "Zlat. Or. Fabr" etched on the back of the blade. The hilt ostentatiously decorated in niello with appliquéd, enamelled Order of St. Anna (chipped) and appliquéd banner inscribed "For valour". Leather-covered scabbard with silver fittings, also lavishly decorated in niello. The locket engraved with the Cyrillic abbreviation "U.V.S" (presumably Уральский Войсковой Старшина). Some of the fittings with the hallmark for 84 zolotniki. Length 91 cm. Comes complete with the original sword knot and hangers with en suite fittings in silver. Rare, distinguished edged weapon. Arkady Nestorovich Annibal (Gannibal) was an officer and adjutant of General of the Cavalry Nikolai Nikolaevich Baratov (representative of the Volunteer Army and the Armed Forces of South Russia under General A. I. Denikin in the government of Georgia). According to several accounts, he was descended from General Abram Petrovich Gannibal. He graduated from the Imperial School of Jurisprudence in 1912. During the civil war, Annibal left Ural for the Far East and later did military service in Iran. He founded ethnographic museums in Teheran and Qazvin, managed the museum and library in Abadan, loved oriental languages, wrote poetry in Russian and French, played the piano and violin, and engaged in painting and sculpture. He died in 1966. See Victor Robsman, Persische Novellen und andere Geschichten, p. 29. By all accounts, the shashka was originally part of the Evgeny Mollo collection (1904 - 1985).
