Allegorische weibliche Figur mit Elefant
Terrakotta-Bozzetto. Auf einer rechteckigen Plinthe im Kontrapost stehende Figur in antikisierender Kleidung, mit der rechten Hand einen Pfeil haltend, hinter ihr ein kleiner stehender Elefant. Stilistisch zeigt die Statuette Parallelen zu Werken des flämischen Bildhauers Artus Quellinus d. Ä.; Dieser gilt als der bedeutendste Barock-Bildhauer in den südlichen Niederlanden, er hatte große Werkstätten in Antwerpen und Amsterdam und beeinflusste die Entwicklung der Bildhauerei nördlich der Alpen. Er lernte bei seinem Vater Erasmus Quellinus (I) in Antwerpen und 1635-1639 in Rom im Atelier von François Duquesnoy. 1640/41 wurde Artus Quellinus Mitglied der Lukasgilde in Antwerpen. Er gewann Aufträge in Amsterdam und arbeitete ab 1650 fünfzehn Jahre lang zusammen am neuen Rathaus (Paleis op de Dam). Das von ihm geleitete Bildhauerteam umfasste viele Personen, die später selbst zu führenden Bildhauern wurden, wie sein gleichnamiger Cousin Artus Quellinus (II). Besch.; H. 29,5 cm.
Mit dem Elefanten wurden seit der Antike diverse Tugenden und eine vieldeutige Symbolik assoziiert - Siegeszeichen, Sinnbild für Langlebigkeit, Mäßigkeit, Keuschheit, Klugheit, Hilfsbereitschaft und Treue; da die Schlange ein Erbfeind des Elefanten sei, galt er auch als Mitstreiter Christi gegen das Böse.

The information about the auction winners is confidential. The auction winner will receive a direct notification from the auction house responsible with instructions for further action: an invoice for payment and the manner in which the goods will be received.
