CHATELAIN, Henri Abraham (1684–1743). Atlas Historique. Amsterdam: Châtelain, 1718–1720.

First edition of vol. 5–7, early editions of vol. 1–4, all maps hand-colored. The Atlas historique is a monumental encyclopedic atlas including many maps and plates by Chatelain and text by the prolific author Nicolas Gueudeville. This copy is complete with volume VI, containing many maps of America including the large folding map "Carte tres curieux de la Mer du Sud". Gueudeville reports information on Canada taken from the works of Baron de La Hontan which he published at the beginning of the 18th century. Koeman, II, 33–38; Tooley America 80.

7 vols. Folio (445 × 280mm). 5 engraved titles plus 290 plates all hand-colored save 9 tables comprising mostly full-page fold-out maps, hand-colored woodcuts ornaments (small tears in some plates including the "Carte tres curieux" with some repaired, offsetting, spotting, toning). Uniform 18th/19th century triple gilt-ruled calf, brown and green morocco labels on spine with gilt titling, edges gilt (joints cracked in places, extremities rubbed, some scrapes on covers, spine heads and tails often chipped).
