ATTRIBUTED TO THE MASTER OF THE FEMALE HALF-LENGTHS (ACTIVE CIRCA 1530-1540), A NUN AT PRAYER, OIL ON PANEL, BEARS A RED WAX SEAL OF A LION RAMPANT (ON THE REVERSE)
In the sixteenth century, at a time of religious upheaval marked by the Protestant Reformation and the Catholic Counter-Reformation, portraits of nuns became an enduring part of the artistic tradition. These works, often in small format and intended for a restricted circle (the family, the convent or an ecclesiastical patron), had a commemorative and devotional function. They bear witness to the spiritual fervour of the nun depicted, while also serving as a means of meditation or remembrance. The vestments - black habit, white veil and wimple - are not just elements of uniform: in the painting, they become signs of a self-effacement in favour of a spiritual union with God. In the same way, the image of the nun with her hands clasped in prayer, whose silhouette stands out against a sober background, emphasises her piety, her humility and her renunciation of the vanities of the world.
