Maria Elisabeth Josepha, Archduchess of Austria (1743 Vienna in 1808, Linz). Three-quarter-length figure turned slightly to the left, the head to the right. In front of pillar, architecture, curtain, drapery, landscape view. In the top right of later-applied inventory number "CR. 178", Verso inscribed, signed and 1763 dated. Oil on canvas 171,5 x 125 cm. Restoration. Min. under min damage. damaged Archduchess Maria Elisabeth of Austria was born as the sixth child and fifth daughter of Maria Theresa and her husband Emperor Franz Stephan to the world. In her youth for her beauty praised, was planning a marriage of the Archduchess to the king of Poland, the implementation of which was vetoed by the Russian tsarina. Also a marriage with Louis XV, the widowed king of France, is said to have been planned. Ultimately, Maria Elisabeth remained unmarried, she went to the noble ladies of the pen to Innsbruck, which she led from 1781 to 1806 as Abbess. The present portrait shows the young Archduchess, the Archduke's hat is conspicuously placed beside her, in graceful attitude, richly dressed and with jewels adorned. "Visited the Fabrique of the 20th July 1761" noted on the back label - apparently the image in memory was this visit, in a Fabrique, which in the parlance of the 18th century. Century were understood as factories for porcelain or tapestry weaving. Johann Karl Auerbach, son of the famous portrait painter Johann Gottfried Auerbach, studied from 1737 to the Imperial Academy in Vienna with Martin von Meytens. In 1752 he was taken following the submission of a representative Mr - portraits - as a member in the Academy. Auerbach was devoted to various Genres, in addition to numerous portraits for the Austrian (High) nobility, his altar paintings of the clients were highly appreciated.
