Ornamental engravings based on French models
Each signed on the plate, some inscribed and numbered. Etchings on handmade paper. 23 sheets mounted behind a passe-partout on the upper edge (passe-partout each 46.5 x 33.5 cm). Some trimmed, stained, browned.

Augsburg war als Stadt der Verlage schon die gesamte Frühe Neuzeit eine der wichtigsten Metropolen, wenn es um Druckgraphik ging. Warum ausgerechnet Augsburg für das Rokoko und den Ornamentstich rund um die Rocaille so eine große Rolle einnimmt, lässt sich nicht abschließend klären, aber es gibt einige nachvollziehbare Möglichkeiten: Zum einen ist den Druckern in Augsburg als Freie Reichsstadt mehr Freiheiten erlaubt als es in anderen Städten wie München der Fall wäre. Zum anderen, zum Beispiel im Vergleich zur ebenfalls Freien Reichsstadt Nürnberg, wurde den Augsburgern Privilegien im Handel mit Frankreich genehmigt. Gleichzeitig hatten einige Verleger wie Wolff, Engelbrecht oder Nilson gute Verbindungen zu französischen Künstlern und Verlegern, die rege Motive nach Augsburg lieferten.

Und die Notwendigkeit war da: Viele Herrscher des Absolutismus im Heiligen Römischen Reich deutscher Nationen wollten sich gegenseitig mit pompösen und prunkvollen Bauten sowie extravaganten Interieurs gegenseitig übertreffen. Dafür benötigten ihre Baumeister auch regelmäßig neue Entwürfe oder auch "inspirative" Vorlagen der französischen Vorbilder. Diese wurden eben durch Kopien französischer Kunst, die aus Augsburger Hand wesentlich günstiger als die französischen Originale waren, den Entwerfern geliefert. Dazu kam es, dass die Augsburger Verleger auch die französischen Titel übersetzten.

Die Vorlagen der hier vorhandenen Drucke stammen allesamt aus Frankreich. Ob diese Nachstiche der Augsburger Verleger als Kopien oder als "Fälschungen" zu bewerten sind, ist eine schwierige Frage. Vor allem im deutschsprachigen Raum sind die meisten Blätter der französischen Ornamentvorlagen jedoch nur durch eben jene Augsburger Nachdrucke in den Ornamentstichsammlungen bekannt, wodurch vor allem den Augsburger Drucken die Rolle der Verbreitung des Rokoko-Ornamentes zufällt und wovon dieses Konvolut auch Zeuge ist.

The information about the auction winners is confidential. The auction winner will receive a direct notification from the auction house responsible with instructions for further action: an invoice for payment and the manner in which the goods will be received.
Each of the auction houses has its own payment policy for the won lots. All auction houses accept bank transfers, most of them accept credit card payments. Shipment of the won lot depends on its size. Small items can be delivered by post. Larger lots are sent by courier. Employees of the auction houses will offer you a wide range to choose from.
