Lot 110 | AURELIUS, Cornelius (c.1460-1531)
Estimate value
£ 4 000 – 6 000
AURELIUS, Cornelius (c.1460-1531)

Die cronycke van Hollandt, Zeelandt en Vrieslant. Leiden: Jan Severszoon, 18 August 1517.

First edition of the ‘Divisiekroniek’, an important Dutch and World history illustrated with fine woodcuts. Divided into 32 sections, the chronicle was in continuous use as a textbook on Dutch history until the 19th century. The superb woodcuts, most of which had been prepared for earlier publications, include some attributed to Lucas van Leyden and his school. This copy, as usual, is lacking Aurelius’s very rare world map which is known in only a few copies. Adams A-2253; Nijhoff & Kronenberg 613.

Folio (307 x 205mm). Title in red and black with large woodcut vignette, numerous woodcuts in the text, 4ff. register at end (lacking the world map as usual, first three leaves and 2E6 with marginal repairs, some marginal chips not affecting text, wormtrack into text affecting final 10 leaves, minor staining to corners of first and last few leaves). Modern antique-style blindstamped sheep. Provenance: Gijsbert van de Poll (inscription on H4r recording the beheading of Johan van Oldenbarnevelt on 13 May 1619, and another on 2B4v dated 1622).
