Lot 194 | AVERY RARE RUSSIAN ICON OF HIGH MUSEUM QUALITY SHOWING THE MOTHER OF GOD STONE NOT HEWN BY MAN'
Estimate value
€ 7 500 – 15 000
Yaroslavl, around 1580
26.5x21.5cm
The depiction, which is very rare in Russia and known under the title "Gora nerukosecnaja", shows the Blessed Mother with the Child Jesus on her left arm, a rock in front of her breast and an arch running over it. The motif is inspired by a dream of King Nabuchadnezzar and its interpretation by the prophet Daniel (Dan. 2:34ff.). In this vision the king saw a stone coming down from a mountain and, without human intervention, crushing a terrible image. The stone itself became a great mountain that filled the whole world. According to Christian interpretation, the Blessed Mother is the mountain and Christ is the stone that came down from the mountain without human intervention, destroyed the pagan idols and filled the whole world with new faith.
