P. G. Wodehouse

WODEHOUSE, P. G. (1881-1975). Bachelors Anonymous. London: Barrie & Jenkins, 1973.

Presentation copy of the first edition, first impression, warmly inscribed by Wodehouse to his long-time collaborator and friend Ira Gershwin: ‘To Ira with more affection than I can express from Plum, P.G. Wodehouse’. We are unable to trace any other inscribed copies in auction records. Published on 15th October 1973, Wodehouse’s 92nd birthday, Bachelors Anonymous was the author's penultimate novel and tells the story of movie mogul and five-time divorcee Ivor Llewellyn who seeks comfort in a bachelors support group. Ivor Llewellyn previously appeared in The Luck of the Bodkins (1935), Frozen Assets (1964), and Pearls, Girls and Monty Bodkin (1972). The present copy was presented by Wodehouse to American lyricist Ira Gershwin, with whom he had frequently collaborated on musical adaptations of his works, such as Oh, Kay! (1926) and A Damsel in Distress (1937).

Octavo. Original publisher’s green cloth, spine lettered in gilt (covers and top edge of front cover very slightly bumped); original pictorial dust-jacket with design after Sir Osbert Lancaster (1908-1986) (light wear, very tiny marginal tears to bottom edge of front cover, some tiny markings to back cover). Provenance: Ira Gershwin (1896-1983; authorial inscription dated Christmas 1973).
