An important South German Renaissance war chest, probably Nuremberg, circa 1550
The rectangular casket of heavy sheet iron with finely wrought reinforcement straps, some in the shape of tendrils. The front with a box-shaped false keyhole and two hasps for padlocks (the eyelets replaced). Two movable carrying handles on the sides, each with a forged rose ornament. Hinged lid, the central key hole fitted with a spring-loaded keyhole cover. Secret sliding mechanism to unlock the lock. On the inside, an elaborate mechanism with twelve movable latches. Massive octagonal chaplet with intact ward and original hollow shank key. The openworked cover plate embellished with warriors and grotesque masks amidst leafy vines. The lockable inner drawer with an intricate mechanism and sliding keyhole cover. Three movable latches. Octagonal chaplet with hollow shank key. Mechanisms are fully functional. Measuring 45 x 49 x 93 cm, weight 122 kg (!).
Unusually heavy war chest of superlative construction.
