Japan. Edo Period. 19. Century

Ivory, carved very fine and Details of dark accented, eyes inlaid in dark Horn with a glossy Patina. Closely rolled up and devoured, the three-klauigen feet tightly to the scaly abdomen. His short horns and the long hair painted in the same manner harmonious to the compact Form. The bearded mouth is slightly open and gazing upwards.

The dragon is the fifth animal of the Japanese zodiac signs and at the same time, one of the Four Mythical beings. Although the long, powerful animal has closely rolled together, could the Carver skillfully to let the dragon extremely powerful and majestic, to appear. The animal, with its snake-like body is vividly portrayed. The face and especially the eyes are designed to be particularly expressive. Height 2.6 cm, width 4.8 cm. Signature: Kagetoshi, in a rectangular Reserve. Artists from Nagoya, cf. LA p. 554-6. Condition A/B.
