China. Ming-Dynastie (1368-1644).

Schwere Bronze mit Lackvergoldung und dunkler Patina. In offizieller Gewandung und mit höfischer Kopfbedeckung sitzt er als Gott der Kultur und Gelehrsamkeit auf einem Thron. Sein Antlitz mit langen Bartsträhnen zeigt einen würdevollen Ausdruck. In verehrendem Gestus mit vor der Brust zusammen gelegten Händen hielt er einst einen hu-Stab. Der Thron zeigt noch Reste der originalen polychromen Bemalung. Am rechten Knie sind unter der hier abgefallenen Lackierung die fein in die Bronze gravierten Bordüren des Gewandes erkennbar.

Ming-zeitliche Bronzefiguren dieser Größe und mit diesem Gewicht sind selten, zudem ist die Lackvergoldung größtenteils außergewöhnlich gut erhalten. Gewicht 6850g, Höhe 36cm. Zustand A/B.

-Ein ähnliches Stück, allerdings mit weniger gut erhaltender Lackfassung wurde am 15.3.2017 unter Lot 551 bei Sotheby's New York versteigert
