A. Lange & Söhne, datiert 29. Februar 1944.
An observation watch for measuring purposes (M-B) of the Waffen SS, A. Lange & Söhne, Glashütte
An observation watch for measuring purposes (M-B) of the Waffen SS, A. Lange & Söhne, Glashütte
Low-volume production for the Weapons and Equipment Office of the Waffen-SS on the basis of the Luftwaffe B-watch, but with a larger diameter (65 mm). Re-lacquered/matted brass case with crown at 3 o’clock and modern leather strap. Black dial with noctilucent indices, surrounding large minutes with additional minutes in retrography (for photographs) and hour scale with Roman numerals, blued luminous hands and central second hand (with 1/5th second-stop mechanism) and inscriptions "W-SS" and "M-B". 2/3 plate in 48/1 calibre with grained gold plating and manual winding, serial number "215803". The lid with punched ALS logo and "C 48" on the inside, the outside with identical number "215803". In working order. Cf. Knirim, "Die Uhren der Deutschen Streitkräfte" (tr. "The watches of the German armed forces"), p. 270/71.
According to the enclosed copy of the shipping ledger the watch was dispatched by registered parcel to the SS Artillery School Glau on 29 February 1944. Comes with a certificate of the Glashütte Watch Museum dated 2002. According to the enclosed older letter the watch was completely disassembled and cleaned, the spring of the angled lever and the setting lever of the hands were replaced by original parts, the balance staff was reproduced and the lacquer of the central part of the case renewed. In all probability the rarest B-watch by ALS.
Comes with a photocopy of the shipping ledger of the company A. Lange & Söhne, dated 29 February, 1944. On that day, eleven SS observation watches were delivered to the SS Führungshauptamt (Leadership Main Office), office IX, Berlin-Wilmersdorf and by registered parcel to the SS Artillery School Glau. The third listed watch is the auctioned item with serial number 215 803.
The watch is in working order and in good condition. Extremely rare; according to the two pages available from the shipping ledger dated 1943 and 1944, supposedly 33 watches were manufactured. We do not know of any further SS observation watches apart from these two items.
