PICTURE CARVER 17./18. Century, Allgäu/Lake Constance area, "Saint Benedict", linden wood, polychrome and silver painted, three-quarter round carved figure of the standing saint holding in his left hand the broken poison cup with snake standing on a book, with his right holding the bishop's crook, hollow on the back carved, around 1700, on a rectangular base (replaced). H: figure with staff approx. 113 cm, total approx. 117 cm. Signs of age and drying, traces of worm damage, restored (1979-1980s in Munich), paintwork renewed and paint chipped off, robe edge part. added, fingers glued. PROVENANCE: came into the family as a gift from a large farmer from Sibratshofen/Allgäu after the dissolution of a chapel to a Pastor (the great-granduncle of the consignor)
