Öl auf Leinwand, links unten vom Künstler signiert und datiert "P. Schmitz nach Stachiewicz 1910", oben rechts der Name des Dargestellten mit Bezeichnung "Kosakenhetmann Anno 1647". Brustbildnis in der rot-goldenen, pelzbesetzten Uniform eines Kosakenführers mit Streitkolben. In neuem, geschmackvollem, reich verziertem Schmuckrahmen. Gebrauchs- und Altersspuren. Bildmaße 42,5 x 31 cm, Rahmenmaße 59 x 48 cm. Sehr repräsentativ.
Chmelnicki (1595 - 1657) gilt als ukrainischer Held im Kampf um die Unabhängigkeit der Kosaken von Polen in den 1640er Jahren.
