First edition and a presentation copy in a handsome contemporary binding of Brahe’s vast astronomical observations made between 1582 and 1601. This copy is inscribed by the editor Albert Curtz (1600-1671), possibly to imperial envoy in Copenhagen Johann von Goëss (1612-1696). In manuscript form, these observations were the base of Johannes Kepler’s publication of the Tabulae Rudolphinae (1627), but they were not printed until Curtz prepared the present edition over 60 years after Brahe’s death. The fine engraved plates include a portrait of the author and a depiction of his observatory at Uraniborg, and numerous woodcuts show a range of astronomical instruments.



2 volumes in one, folio (319 x 205mm). 2 xylographic title pages, double-page engraved frontispiece depicting the four emperors with terrestrial and celestial globes, 2 engraved plates of which one single-page portrait of Brahe and one folding plate of his observatory at Uraniborg (first 2 leaves on stubs, repaired tears on title and into upper area of text in Z3-4). Contemporary German blind-stamped panelled calf over wooden boards, original clasps and catches (some loss of leather to lower portion of upper boards). Provenance: ‘Ex dono authoris R. P. Alberti Curtz’ (inscription on title) – ‘Bibliothecae Baronis de Goessen Legati Caesarei’ (Johann von Goëss, 1612-1696; inscription on preliminary leaf possibly in a secretarial hand).
