$ 2 000 – 3 000
Perspective of Nudes. Preface by Lawrence Durrell. London: The Bodley Head, 1961
4to. Illustrated with 90 black and white gravure plates; occasional thumb-soiling. Original patterned paper boards, spine and upper cover lettered in red; corners lightly bumped. Original photographic dust jacket; some creasing, short closed tear to lower panel with tape repair to verso. Housed in a grey cloth clamshell case.
First edition, presentation copy, inscribed on the front free endpaper: "For Debra Patnaik with gratitude, Bill Brandt."
An important body of work from the famed British photographer: "These startling images rewrote the language of nude photography in not one, but several quarters ... Brandt's approach was primarily formal, but his own sensibilities, combined with photography's tendency to overwhelm form's purity with life's impurities, ensured that his nudes are as interesting for their psychological undertones as for the wealth of unexpected forms he conjured" (The Photobook).
