A bronze closure plate for a Roman body armour, 2nd - 3rd century
Rectangular bronze base plate with a quadrant-shaped opening at the top. The right half of a pair of fastening plates at the neck of a Roman coat of mail. The left, top and bottom edges bordered by a ridge, hammered from beneath, the right side with just a smooth edge. The inner section bordered by a ridge with grooves running crosswise, tracing the outlines of the armour plate. Moreover, bead and reel ornaments inside the ridge, a rosette at the ridge's tip.
A repoussé bust of Hercules in the interior, first chased over a model, then re-chased on the top. Frontal bust, the head with curly hair and no beard, looking to the right. A lion's skin draped over the right shoulder, a strap running over the left. Below which, likewise chased, a crossed club and bow, the handle of the club modelled on a Roman sword. Three rectangular cutouts between the grooved outer and inner ridges running around the rim. These originally accommodated three revolving toggles, which were fastened to a symmetrically mounted pair. Three double perforations in the rim on the right, which were used to attach the plate to scale armour or a coat of mail.
Beautiful, dark green 'noble patina'. Minimal chipping at the edge, otherwise in immaculate condition. Height 14.4 cm. Width 7.6 cm. Typical component of protective armour worn by Roman soldiers during the late Limes period. In outstanding condition.
