An Italian bronze door knocker with figure of Neptune, from the workshop of Alessandro Vittoria, 1st half of the 17th century
Bronze with a green patina. The door knocker cast in several pieces in the shape of a lyre. Two winged hippocampi, supported on the solid shell base, flanking the central figure of Neptune in a proud contrapposto. His left hand resting gently on the fish tail, the sea god holds his trident powerfully aloft in his right hand. His head slightly turned to one side, his gaze pointing downwards. Length 38 cm.
Alessandro Vittoria (1525 - 1608) was a Mannerist-style sculptor in Venice. After finishing his training under Jacopo Sansovino, Vittoria received innumerable major commissions and worked for the famous architect Andrea Palladio.
In terms of shape and workmanship, this knocker is extremely similar to the picchiotto bronzeo (Bottega di Alessandro Vittoria), which is now in the Museo Civico in Padua. Therefore, this figure was most probably cast in this mould by the artist's workshop or is a contemporary copy.
