Estimate value
£ 3 000 – 5 000
A Clockwork Orange. London: Heinemann, 1962.
Uncorrected proof copy of Burgess’s seminal dystopian novel. Celebrated by the Modern Library as one of the 100 best English novels of the 20th century, it was adapted into a now-classic film directed by Stanley Kubrick. Its radical exploration of language, violence, and government coercion has earned it a place on banned book lists for over 50 years. The final chapter, in which Alex sees the error of his ways, was omitted from all American editions of the text until 1986.
Octavo. (Some faint spotting, minor bump to fore-edge of first 10 leaves.) Original printed card wrappers (short closed tears to spine, faint soiling to lower wrapper). Provenance: Mr. H. L. Hall (ownership inscription on front wrapper).
