MELVILL, Allan (1782-1832). A collection of documents, manuscripts, letters and ephemera, various places, 1801-1822.

In English and French. 50 pages (approx.) various sizes (some tears, marginal wear). Housed loosely in a set of paper boards bearing manuscript title; "Patterns Miss Fanny Melville's."‌

Allan Melvill in business. A collection of business papers, including a short set of accounts dating between 1819 to 1822 recording transactions with several individuals including John R. Livingston and others; a manuscript "Shipbook" detailing a March 1804 London-bound consignment of "merchandize Shipped jointly with John Ali's & Joseph Beti… on board Ship Fox … for London and consigned to Samuel Mast merct…."; a 27 January 1803 manuscript letter to Allan from "your distressed friend" who was in financial trouble due in part due to the "disruption of remittances from America, [including] yourself … and others with many loss by the late Bankruptcys here, as embarrassed our friend, for these last three or four Months beyond description…" (with a good deal of similar content). Docketed on verso in Melvill's hand "D. Cargill Paris 27th January 1803." Also of interest is a selection of prices-current sheets from French dry goods merchants, some of which are annotated in manuscript. [With:] Five transmittal envelopes, two addressed to Gansevoort Melville (one as member of the American Legation in London) and three to Augusta Melville.
