Paris um 1700. Silber. Drei Füße, oktogonaler Korpus mit integriertem Kompass, Halterung in Vogelform mit aufstellbarem Zeiger. Stundenanzeige in römischen und arabischen Ziffern. Auf Zifferblatt bezeichnet «Butterfield AParis». Verso überwiegend französische Städtenamen nebst Breitengradangaben in Grad und Minute. Feingehaltsstempel. Sehr guter, funktionstüchtiger Zustand.

Der Brite Michael Butterfield (1635 - 1724) lebte als Hersteller und Erfinder von wissenschaftlichen Instrumenten in Paris und entwickelte das nach ihm benannte Zifferblatt für tragbare achteckige Horizontalsonnenuhren mit integriertem Kompass. Gedacht waren sie für Reisende, um es ihnen zu ermöglichen, die Zeit an ihrem Standort zu bestimmen.
