Estimate value
£ 1 500 – 2 200
Autograph letter signed (‘C. Pissarro’) to [Maximilien] Luce, Kew, 24 July 1892
In French. 1½ pages, 229 x 180mm. Provenance: Sotheby's, 12 & 13 May 1981, lot 22.
Camille Pissarro reports from London to his friend and fellow-Impressionist Maximilien Luce. Pissarro begs forgiveness from his friend for the lateness of his reply and for neglecting to forward another letter. He updates him on goings-on in London: he was unable to meet with messieurs Malato and Brochart because of a prior engagement at ‘chez [?Charles] Ricke[?t]ts’. His son Lucien has had to leave for Éragny to ‘manage our affairs’, which appear to have been going badly. Now, he writes, it is just a matter of selling. He reports on the dismal weather in London: on Sunday, ‘il a fait un si vilain temps qu’il nous a pas été possible de mettre un pied dehors de la journée’. He asks Luce to pass on his compliments to Paul Signac if he sees him.
