'Kloster Mehrerau Bregenz I', chromo print on paper, 60 cm x 60 cm photograph dimension, 84 cm x 84 cm inner passepartout dimension, verso signed, dated on a sticker 1999, numbered 4/6, titled.
Candida Höfer is a German photographer, who studied at the Düsseldorf Academy under Bernd Becher in the 1970s. Her colour photographic work focuses on public spaces, such as libraries, lecture halls, museums, which are used by society. Although people are omitted from her images, the photographs implied their presence, as well as the respective histories of the spaces. Höfer's conceptual photographic approach focuses on the typology of specific spatiality, which is revealed by comparing a series. In these two works by the artist, too, the view into a room is the unifying element of the photographs. It is clear that people are there, for as a viewer you conclude that you have certainly already entered such a room in the course of your life. With the books on the shelves, the focus is immediately on knowledge and the stories of how the objects on display came to be in the respective rooms.
