CARLEVARIIS, Luca (1663-1730) - Le fabriche e vedute di venezia. Venice: Giovan Battista Finazzi a San Giovanni Crisostomo, [ca. 1703]. A very good copy of the first edition with the plates all unnumbered in first state but plates 82, 86 and 98 in second state numbered in bottom right corner. The first edition, with the imprint of G.B. Finazzi, was published in 1703, with 100 plates. It was a great success, and the number of plates was gradually increased with each succeeding edition. Cf. Berlin Kat. 2682 (100 plates); Succi, Da Carlevarijs ai Tiepolo, pp.112 ff. Oblong folio (290 x 405mm). Engraved title, dedication to Doge Luigi Mocenigo dated 27 May 1703, and 101 unnumbered etched views by Carlevaris, between plates 38 and 39 there is an extra plate with slightly smaller measurments rappresenting the Scuola della Spirito Santo su le Zatere, all plates are in first state but plates 82, 86 and 98 which are in second state an numbered within the plate at bottom right corner (ca. 10 plates at center have a marginal waterstaing and few plates at end have a smaller but darker marginal waterstain). Contemporary speckled calf, speckled edges (rebacked with modern spine). Provenance: William Clavering-Cowper, 2nd Earl Cowper (1709-1764, armorial bookplate) - A. J. Kant (bookplate).
