4to (355 x 263mm.), hand-coloured lithographed title-page, dedication, 10 hand-coloured lithographed plates, contemporary morocco gilt by Copp, Clark & Co., Toronto, spine with raised bands in six compartments, gilt edges, marbled endpapers, inner dentelles, some spotting and browning, extremities slightly rubbed

Catherine Parr Traill (1802-1899) was an English-Canadian naturalist who was the author of 24 books on topics including natural history, especially botanical studies. She collected plants and is known as a pioneer for female botanists. She and her sisters Agnes Strickland, Jane Margaret Strickland, Susanna Moodie, and Elisabeth Strickland formed a noteworthy early group of women authors. Agnes Fitzgibbon (1833-1913) was Traill's niece, a prolific natural history artist.

This work attracted 500 subscriptions, a remarkable number at the time. It went through four editions.
