$ 4 000 – 6 000
Paris: Imprimerie Royale, 1753.

First edition, in red morocco with the arms of the Duc de Choiseul-Praslin. Although only twenty-nine in 1753, Chabert had already received official recognition for his work in rectifying the previously incorrect longitude of Buenos Aires. Chabert set sail from Brest in 1750, and spent a year surveying the coasts of Nova Scotia and Cape Breton Island, having established his astronomical instruments in the governor of Louisburg’s garden. The work was highly praised by the French Academy of Science and upheld as a model to future navigators. Howgego C87; Sabin 11723.

Quarto (251 x 195mm). Engraved publisher's device on title, engraved head-piece by L.D. Gobin after de Flote St. Joseph, six engraved folding charts by Dheulland after Chabert, one folding astrological table, and one printed folding table of solar calculations (occasional spotting). Contemporary French red morocco gilt, all edges gilt, silk ribbon bookmark, with the arms of the Duc de Praslin on covers. Provenance: César Gabriel de Choiseul, Duc de Praslin (1712-1785; binding) – Eugène Prouhet (1817-1867, French mathematician; ink stamp).
