CHAPMAN, Frederik Henrik af (1721-1808)

Architectura Navalis Mercatoria. Stockholm: [John George Lange], 1768.

John Scott Russell’s copy of the first edition of the most celebrated 18th-century work on shipbuilding. Frederik Henrik af Chapman is widely regarded as the father of naval architecture and his Architectura Navalis Mercatoria was the first substantial collection of ship-building draughts for practical use. In some copies, the plates are unfolded or flattened, so that the book takes on an oblong folio form. Beautifully capturing the technical and artistic aspects of ship design, it has been used as a model for shipbuilding treatises since publication.

Large folio (560 x 445mm). Double-page engraved title by Arre with view of Stockholm harbour, double-page engraved dedication, 4 laid-in letterpress index leaves in English and French replacing the original contents leaves in Swedish, 62 double-page engraved plates on thick paper (variable browning and spotting, a few leaves with faint dampstain just into engraved area). 19th-century red morocco gilt by J. J. Leighton with wide roll-tool border and gilt panelled spine gilt inner dentelles, edges gilt (extremities lightly rubbed, some scuff marks to lower board). Provenance: John Scott Russell (civil engineer and naval architect, 1808-1882; bookplate) – Institution of Naval Architects, Scott Library (label recording bequest in 1930) – Christie’s, London, 6 November 1997, lot 24.
