Charte universelle de tout le monde. Paris: Melchior Tavernier, 1628 (text dated 1639)

750 x 1310mm., twin-hemispherical engraved wall map on two sheets, coloured by hand, letterpress border on three sides (“Traité succinct des principes de la geographie”), contemporary wooden rollers, recently backed on linen, some loss reinstated in facsimile, mainly affecting the letterpress text, repaired tears

“THE FIRST WORLD MAP TO MARK, WITH NAMES, CARSTENSZ.’ DISCOVERIES OF 1623 ON THE WESTERN COAST OF AUSTRALIA” (Shirley).

Shirley further notes “This up-to-date and well-constructed map… is the joint effort of Cornelis Danckerts from Amsterdam and the Parisian Melchior Tavernier who describes himself as graveur et imprimeur du Roy. The map is dedicated by Tavernier to the King of France and the title says it is corrected by the latest discoveries of the English, Dutch etc. There are majestic cherubic figures in the spandrels and on either side of the central celestial hemispheres”.

The map is of considerable rarity – Shirley locates five copies: in the British Library, the Library of Congress, the Bibliothèque nationale, and two in the Amsterdam University library.
