Lot 194 | Chasing debts owed to his law partner, Stephan T. Logan
Estimate value
$ 4 000 – 6 000
LINCOLN, Abraham (1809-1865). Autograph document signed ("Logan & Lincoln p q"), Tazewell County Circuit Court, n.d. [ca. 1842].

One page, 318 x 193mm (separations at horizontal folds reinforced on verso, light soiling, edge wear).

Lincoln's legal summation of debts owed to his law partner, Stephan T. Logan, in the case of Logan v. Garth. The plaintiff Littleton T. Garth gave a promissory note of $288.97 to Charles S. Baker, which was later assigned to a O.H. Browning, who then assigned it to Stephan T. Logan. Garth failed to pay Logan, and Logan retained Lincoln in the ensuing lawsuit. Though undated, this document was likely presented to the court to commence the lawsuit, as the clerk's court summons of the case, penned 26 August 1842, bears this exact language. Garth would default, and the court ruled for Logan.
